More Child Deaths In Tharparkar Famine

  • Date: Tue, 11/04/2014 - 17:33
  • Just five days ago, two babies died in the drought and famine-affected area of Pakistan’s Tharparkar Desert.

The children were no more than a week old and were being treated in Mithi hospital, bringing the death toll to thirty six in October alone, reports SAMAA News.

Mithi, the capital city of the Tharparkar Desert, is commonly affected by the intense droughts that affect many regions over the desert’s 22, 000 square kilometres.

Long stretches without rainfall severely affect the region’s farmland, making it difficult to yield crops and feed livestock. Water wells dry up and poor governance and infrastructure has rendered 114 pipes dysfunctional.

Drought quickly turns into famine under these distressing circumstances and the city’s struggling inhabitants must travel miles for access to the nearest medical treatment.

Thousands living in arid regions of the Thar Desert struggle every day to survive. We cannot make the rain fall, but you CAN provide them with clean drinking water.

FLOW International’s first water filtration plant was installed two years ago on the edge of the Thar Desert and continues to provide clean drinking water during times of drought.
